Do 3D Configurators Increase Inquiries? What the Published Cases Show

7 min read

Makers who add a 3D configurator report 20-40% more leads and quote requests. Here are the published cases, what they really measured, and how to check the effect on your own site.

A configurator looks good in a demo. The question an owner actually asks is simpler: will more people send me a request? We collected the published cases where makers reported what happened to their leads, quote requests and sales after adding 3D, and checked what each number really measures.

The short answer

In the published cases, yes. Makers that added a 3D configurator report 20-40% more leads or quote requests, and some report much larger jumps in custom orders. Almost all of these numbers come from the companies or their software vendors, not from controlled tests, so treat them as direction, not a promise. The way to know for sure is to measure it on your own site, as described below.

How to read these numbers honestly

Before you put any of these figures into a business plan, know their limits:

  • They are self-reported. Most come from the company or the vendor that sold the tool. Nobody publishes the configurator that changed nothing.
  • Users are not a random group. "Shoppers who used 3D bought more" partly means that keen buyers are the ones who play with 3D.
  • Other things changed too. Oakywood's jump came in the same period as a rebrand and a move to Shopify Plus.
  • Big headline numbers lack a method. Shopify says merchants who add 3D see a 94% conversion lift on average, but it has not published how that was measured (Shopify).

The more careful evidence points the same way, only smaller. Amazon reports an average 9% sales improvement when its "View in Your Room" AR placement is turned on for a listing, based on a 2023 Amazon study (Amazon). A peer-reviewed Journal of Marketing study found that AR has a positive but small effect on online sales overall, and a stronger one for niche products, less-known brands and higher-priced items (ScienceDaily, 2021).

That last finding matters for makers. A garden sauna, a hot tub or a made-to-measure sofa is niche, expensive and usually sold under a brand the buyer has never heard of. That is the kind of product where seeing it in 3D should help the most.

Why a configurator brings more inquiries

  1. It answers the question that stops the buyer. "What will mine look like?" is the main reason people do not commit to a custom product. The configurator shows it.
  2. It gives a price at 10 pm. Buyers research on their own time. Gartner found that 61% of B2B buyers prefer a buying experience without a sales rep (Gartner, 2025), and in its next survey the figure was 67% (Gartner, 2026).
  3. It makes asking easy. Sending a finished design takes one click. Writing an email from scratch about sizes and options takes effort, and many people never start.
  4. The buyer has already invested time. Someone who spent ten minutes designing their sauna wants to know if they can have it.

More inquiries is half the story: better inquiries

A configured request arrives with the size, options, price seen and a picture. Your team does not need three emails to find out what the buyer wants, so you can send a quote the same day.

Speed matters more than most owners think. In a study of 1.25 million online leads at 42 US companies, firms that tried to contact the lead within an hour were nearly seven times as likely to qualify it as firms that waited even one hour longer. An audit of 2,241 companies in the same research found the average reply took 42 hours, and 23% never replied at all (Harvard Business Review, 2011). A complete request is what makes a fast answer realistic.

How to measure the effect on your own site

  1. Write down your baseline. For the last 8-12 weeks: visitors and inquiries per product page.
  2. Track the configurator. Count how many people open it, finish a design and send a request.
  3. Sort inquiries by quality. How many arrive with a full spec, and how many are "how much does it cost?".
  4. Compare like with like. Saunas, hot tubs and garden houses are seasonal, so compare with the same months last year, not with last month.
  5. Measure your side too. Time from request to quote, and the share of quotes that turn into orders.
  6. Review after 3 months. Inquiries per 100 visitors, quality share, close rate and revenue per inquiry.

If inquiries per 100 visitors rise and the share of complete requests rises, the configurator is working. If they do not, the problem is usually traffic, the price shown, or a slow reply, and those are worth fixing before you build more.

What this means for Lithuanian makers

When we looked at the websites of Lithuanian sauna, hot tub, garden house and furniture makers in early November 2026, most sold the same way: photos, a price list and a contact form. Only a few used 3D, AR or a step-by-step configurator.

That is an opening. These are expensive products with many options, often sold to buyers in other cities or abroad who will never visit the yard. The cases above suggest the first maker in a niche to let buyers design and price the product online gets the most complete requests, and gets them first.

Frequently asked questions

The published cases report results within months to the first year. Measure for at least 8-12 weeks and compare with the same season last year.
It changes the calls. Fewer "how much does it cost" questions, more conversations with people who already know what they want.
A configurator turns existing visitors into inquiries. It does not bring new visitors. With little traffic, start with 3D images and short videos for ads, made from the same model, and add the configurator later.
Yes. BOSTONtec measured exactly that: 30% more quote requests. The configurator can show a price range instead of a final price and send you a detailed request.
Treat it with care. Shopify has not published how it was measured. Smaller numbers from careful studies, like Amazon's 9%, are a safer basis for planning.
